Surfing is a fantastic way to get out in the water, have fun, and stay active. It is also pretty physically challenging, especially if you are at the start of your surfing journey.

The Algarve offers many great surf beaches and opportunities to learn and progress, from small waves to the more challenging, and with extensive coastline around the west and south coast, Weligama has become a seriously popular surf destination.

One things for sure, whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned surfer, a day in the water will leave you feeling exhilarated and also a bit tired out!

Find out why adding massage into your after surf routine will help boost your recovery and performance

Pressure Level

Communicate with your therapist about the level of pressure you prefer, as massage can vary in intensity.

1. Relief from muscle fatigue

As most surfers will know, the aching muscles are definitely more of an issue when you are first starting out, it can feel like such a surprise waking up in the morning after your first surf session to what feels like muscles you never knew you had, screaming at you.

After surf massage focuses on those paddling muscles, working into the back, shoulders and pectoral muscles, but not forgetting those paddling arms and lower back, hips and legs as you pull up and try to get to your feet and master your stance.

2. Increase flexibility and mobility

Surf massage will also focus not just on tissue manipulation, but also stretching and assessing how your muscles are responding to these stretches so your therapist can suggest areas to work on and give you some stretches and exercises to continue to support your mobility and recovery

3. Speed up your recovery

Whilst we cannot prevent wipe-outs or other board related injuries, massage can certainly speed up your recovery.

When you use your body for repeated actions and are in and out of cold water your muscles begin to contract and get a build up of lactic acid. Massage will help to stretch out and break down the tension in the muscles, as well as get your endorphins going. These are the body's natural pain relief, so this combination of tissue release and endorphin release is a perfect way to end your day and get you feeling ready for the next session rather than waking up tired and achy and struggling to paddle out the next day.

A more intensive massage, focusing on releasing tension and restoring energy to tired muscles to enhance your recovery. Again, in consultation with your therapist, you can discuss any areas of specific concern to tailor your treatment to best suit what your body needs. Contrary to popular belief, deep or sports massage does not have to be painful to be effective, and our therapists will work with your body and threshold levels to ensure your comfort.

An aroma massage, also known as aromatherapy massage, is a type of massage therapy that incorporates essential oils derived from plants, applied to the skin during the massage, to promote relaxation, stress relief, and other therapeutic benefits by utilizing both the touch of the massage and the scent of the essential oils; the specific oil blend is chosen based on the individual's needs and desired effects, like calming, invigorating, or pain relief.

Aromatherapy massage is a natural and effective way to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. By incorporating the use of essential oils, a massage therapist can enhance the massage experience and provide a variety of therapeutic benefits.

Essential oils
The core element is the use of essential oils, which are concentrated plant extracts with various therapeutic properties like calming lavender, uplifting citrus, or pain-relieving peppermint.

Application
These oils are typically diluted in a carrier oil (like coconut or almond oil) and applied to the skin during the massage using gentle strokes, kneading, or pressure point techniques.

Benefits
Aroma massage can help with stress reduction, anxiety relief, improved sleep quality, muscle tension release, pain management, improved mood, and skin health.
Customization
Depending on the individual's needs, a massage therapist can create a customized blend of essential oils to target specific concerns.

How does aroma massage work?

Olfactory sense
When you inhale the essential oil during the massage, the scent reaches your olfactory receptors in the nose, sending signals to the brain that can promote relaxation or other desired effects.
Dermal absorption
Some of the essential oil molecules also penetrate the skin, allowing them to interact with the body's systems at a deeper level.
Important considerations:
Consult a professional
Always consult a qualified massage therapist or our Master who is trained in aromatherapy to ensure the safe and appropriate use of essential oils, especially if you have any medical conditions or allergies.

Sports massage therapy is not quite a deep tissue massage, nor is it the same as a relaxation massage. We also have different types of sports massage depending on your event schedule so you should first discuss the details including your health concerns and the sports you engage in improving performance, and preventing injuries. Sports Massage should be done on a regular basis as maintenance.

The pressure is deeper to manipulate the soft tissue, and stretching is included to help increase your range of motion and flexibility. It is common to feel sore after the massage, so you don't want to schedule one the day of a game or event.

Who should be treated?

Sports massages are not limited to athletes. Sports massage is an appropriate massage treatment for anyone who is in need of a remedial or soft tissue mobilisation. The remedial effects of sports massage are beneficial post-surgery, alongside physiotherapy, osteopathy or chiropractic, or as a health benefit within an office environment.
Within a sporting context, people who participate in sport can use a sports massage as a regular part of their training programme. Sports massage is also effective as a performance enhancement. Although the name implies a sporting clientele, it is a massage treatment appropriate to all.

A oil massage is a much gentler and more relaxing form of massage which uses deep rhythmic movements to relieve tension and loosen up stiff muscles.

However, most enthusiasts don't know that although we might be in some state of total relaxation, our bodies are going into full activation mode during a massage.

Typically, these sessions last a minimum of 90 minutes, allowing enough time to work over all the significant body areas like the back, shoulders, legs, feet, arms, hands, and neck.In addition, a full body therapy massage helps stimulate our nervous system; wakes up our muscles, organs, and glands; carries out blood and lymph fluid, and gets multitudes of cells to produce and release chemicals and hormones. Our bodies need a massage to renew themselves and reverse the effects of stress.

How Does It Work ?

surrounds muscles in the body. When the fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can cause pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Myofascial cupping can help to release this tension and improve blood flow to the affected area.

When cups are placed on the skin, they create suction that pulls on the muscles and tissues. This can cause a reduced blood flow to the area, which makes the body respond by sending more blood to that area. The increased blood flow can help reduce pain.

The suction of the cups also helps stretch and loosen up the tissues, making them more flexible and easier to move. Cupping differs from traditional deep tissue massage, which applies pressure to the tissues. Cupping can also help calm irritated nerves and trigger points because, during a session, the body may release natural neurotransmitters that control and minimize pain.

What is a treatment like?

The cups are placed on the targeted areas. The intensity of the suction should be minimal to moderate but within the patient's comfort level. Most treatments last from two minutes to 15 minutes in one specific region. The cup is placed in one position and not moved for the duration of the treatment.

Cupping can be performed on different body parts, including the back, legs, and arms. It is often part of a larger treatment plan that may include other physical therapy techniques.

Benefits of myofascial cupping

Cupping can help with chronic pain, arthritis or conditions like fibromyalgia. It can also promote the breakdown of scar tissue in the muscles. Other benefits include:

• Release of muscle tension and pain

• Improved range of motion and flexibility

• Reduced inflammation and swelling

• Improved circulation

After treatment

After a myofascial cupping session, you may have increased redness in the area.

This is temporary and occurs due to the dilation of the blood vessels. You may also experience marks or bruising. Muscle aches are common for the next 24 hours after treatment. The feeling is similar to the day after a vigorous workout. As with instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, you can rupture small capillaries in some blood vessels closest to the skin, which will go away in one to three weeks.
